Better Bungalow Decarbonization in Process

Decarbonization & Deep Energy Retrofit

Decarbonization is when we eliminate gas appliances by designing an efficient, all-electric building powered by heat pumps and renewable energy. For existing buildings, we usually conduct a deep energy retrofit to seal the envelope and provide continuous insulation.

Decarbonization and Deep Energy Retrofit: What to Know

Often, over 60% of waste energy can be eliminated using solid building science for thermal envelope optimization. In all cases, energy recovery ventilation ensures great indoor air quality. As building components age, replacements are needed–and should be guided by a decarbonization strategy to allow the building to upgrade its performance as it ages.

How We Plan for Decarbonization

Planning for decarbonization requires systems thinking for the building. Our energy model and building science analyses provide technical guidance toward whole-system solutions for anyone considering long-term stewardship of their built environment, whether residential, commercial, or institutional buildings.

The TBDA Process

Our process for decarbonization begins by defining a sustainable goal for the building’s performance. With goals set, we identify surfaces and components that can be improved to upgrade performance, guided by energy consumption predictions and an understanding of heat and moisture flows through the enclosure. Finally, we provide an electrification plan by specifying mechanical systems and appliances. This work can be completed all at once or in phases as components age out.
