How Passive Design Works
Passive design involves performing detailed energy modeling on a design using local climate data and site shading information. Initial modeling feedback helps refine the design to align with energy efficiency goals by adjusting insulation levels, window size and orientation, shading, mechanical system efficiencies, and other strategies. The clear-cut metrics of the Phius standard give us objective targets optimized for climate and building type. Further design refinement includes creating airtightness strategies for the entire thermal envelope, modeling any unavoidable thermal bridges, and developing the energy recovery ventilation system, a key component for healthy air inside the building.
